Hi I think I might be missing something here so apologies in advance.

I have installed WHS 2011 fine and set up backups fine including the system partitions etc but how do you do a restore of the OS to another disk?

e.g. say my disk failed with the os on how do I recover?, my data is all on other disks and partitions so
I tried the repair option from the install disk, it finds the backups ok but it doesn't ask for a destination as such to the image to be written to and comes up with an error 0x80070057.

Can you do a bare-metal restore of the OS or do you have to install a fresh copy and load up dashboard the restore from there?

Please help because I keep breaking my install so want a way to recover from a saved good install rather than re installing every time!

You are restoring to the last good WHS 2011 OS backup, right? That error is typically for mismatched drive locations. For example. if you are trying to perform a restore with a USB drive when it was not in the machine during the last backup. Try doing the Restore from the original DVD.

If you are going to use the USB then you can remove the USB at the last step before pressing "Next" to start the Recovery.

Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks Tim, yes I am using the USB, but I did exclude the USB drive letter as it is an option on the restore.
I will try as you suggest and pull the USB as I have run out of blank DVD's with all these test versions!

Magic that was spot on Tim, I found that even if you tick the 'exclude' option for the disk's you don't want to restore (i.e. the flash drive with the install on) it does't work but if I pull all the thumb drive it is fine, not sure if this is a bug as such sounds like not; as you understood what was happening. Well Done Problem solved.

Thanks, Please mark as solved.

Glad it helped you out. Andrew, Jim and I try to address each post and, between the two of us, we can usually get you up and running!

I will leave the post up so anyone else having the same answer can see the solution.
